About Alexandra AVROS
Alexandra AVROS is a Vienna-based contemporary artist working primarily with large-scale mixed-media painting.
Her practice explores form before language — the point at which matter, gesture, repetition and absence begin to organise meaning before they become fixed image, symbol or name.
AVROS develops long-term bodies of work in which recurring structures emerge, dissolve and return. Her paintings are built through layered processes of abrasion, removal, sanding, erasure and revealing, allowing light and form to appear gradually from dark, dense surfaces.
Her work investigates the forces that organise visible form: memory, repetition, gravity, tension and absence.
Based in Vienna, she continues to develop interconnected bodies of work including The Archaic, Vessels of Time and Spirals of Memory.
Studio Practice
AVROS works from an independent studio in Vienna, where paintings develop through prolonged interaction with material rather than through predetermined imagery.
Dark layered surfaces are repeatedly abraded, removed, softened and returned to. Friction, residue, pressure and irregularity are retained rather than concealed.
The studio therefore functions not simply as a place of production, but as a site of observation — where form is tested through matter, duration and repetition.
